Coast in Mist
Coast in Mist by Ralph Allen, 61 x 91.4 cm. Photo: Bernard Clark. Source: City of Kingston Civic Collection.
Ralph Allen (1926-) is a teacher, director, curator and artist. He studied at the Sir John Cass College of Art in London as well as the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London before coming to Canada in 1957. He taught painting, drawing and graphic arts under André Biéler at Queen’s University until becoming the Director of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre from 1963-1972. Coast in Mist, 1959 demonstrates the influence of English 19th century painter J.M.W. Turner on Allen’s landscape with its romantic and graceful abstract-impressionistic qualities.
