La femme au putois

La femme au putois
La femme au putois by André Biéler, oil on Masonite, 122.2 x 61.3 cm. Photo: Bernard Clark. Source: City of Kingston Civic Collection.
André Charles Biéler (1896-1989) was an energetic artist, teacher and arts administrator. From 1936 to1963 he was professor of art at Queen’s University. During his tenure, he organized the inaugural Conference of Canadian Artists (1941) which eventually became the Federation of Canadian Artists. He was also fundamental in the formation of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre and was its founding director in 1957. La femme au putois, 1960 exemplifies Biéler's appreciation for light and colour and demonstrates his ability to depict traditional subject matter using modern techniques.
