A.Y. Jackson (1882-1974) helped to define Canadian visual identity during the 1900s as a member of the Group of Seven. After studying painting in Paris he returned to Canada and shared a studio with Tom Thompson and an artistic exchange occurred that fundamentally contributed to Canadian Art. Jackson learned about the Canadian wilderness from Thompson in exchange for teaching Thomson artistic techniques. Throughout his career he championed landscape-based nationalism while travelling across Canada to sketch and paint. Jackson frequently returned to the regions of his youth including Quebec.
